Chinese automaker Chery has filed a design patent for its flagship SUV, the Tiggo 8, in India, signaling its intent to enter the competitive SUV segment. The move suggests that a launch could follow soon, placing the Tiggo 8 as a potential rival to the Mahindra XUV700, Tata Safari, MG Hector Plus, and Hyundai Alcazar.
The patent reveals that the Indian version will largely resemble the international model. It features a bold octagonal grille, sharp LED headlamps with integrated DRLs, a sloping roofline, 19-inch alloy wheels, squared wheel arches, and flush-fitting door handles. Measuring 4.7 metres in length with a 2.7-metre wheelbase, the Tiggo 8 offers strong road presence and spacious interiors.
Inside, the SUV is expected to deliver a premium experience. Globally, the Tiggo 8 comes equipped with a 15.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a flat-bottom steering wheel, 12-speaker premium audio setup, wireless charging, ambient lighting, and a panoramic sunroof. Safety features include nine airbags, stability systems, and a comprehensive ADAS suite with multiple driver-assist functions.
Powering the Tiggo 8 is a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine, producing up to 245 hp and 390 Nm of torque. The engine is paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox, and select markets also get a ZF all-wheel-drive system. If launched in India with similar specifications, the SUV will combine strong performance with efficiency and advanced driving dynamics.
While Chery has not yet announced an official launch date or pricing, the design patent confirms the company’s focus on expanding into India’s rapidly growing SUV market. Industry experts expect the Tiggo 8 to be positioned in the ₹30–35 lakh bracket, targeting buyers looking for a feature-rich, premium three-row SUV.
The patent filing marks an important step in Chery’s India journey. If launched, the Tiggo 8 will add a new global player to the mid-size premium SUV segment, offering Indian customers more choice in style, performance, and technology.
